FINS - Fear Is Not Safe
FINS is a self-help group in Wilmington, NC for people with any sort of fear of water.
If you are afraid to go in the water, but have always wanted to, if you're always sitting on the side while others are having fun and you wish you could join in, if you are not satisfied with managing your fear but are determined to HEAL it... ....then this group might be for you. FINS is for people of all ages to get together occasionally to explore, play and have fun in the water in order to help each other overcome their fear of water. This is absolutely a No stress! No pressure! Just fun! sort of thing. |
Foto above: Whatever it takes to feel safe and be able to have fun!!! Wear goggles, life vest, swim-ring...hold on to that line.... but be in the water! (pretty cold in the Winter in FL, but an amazing exprience)
You will be more likely to become comfortable if you don't feel pressured and if you don't pressure yourself! You can heal if you are having fun! Sounds good, doesn't it?! We can meet at a variety of beautiful watery locations, the ocean, the basin, the soundside, the YMCA (not so beautiful...but practical and they have a hot tub that is great for learning to float on your back, etc) , etc. We can go swim, kayak, snorkel, stand-up paddle board, play in the surf, wade in water, or just sit by the water,... whatever may be a fun thing to do, or try. Our goal is to be comfortable, and ultimately free of fear and panic in water. We meet to talk about issues relating to fear of water. We make plans together and build the support we need to create a comfortable, safe environment to learn to be free in water. Please e-mail me for more information or to point me to other groups with similar goals. There is no money involved in this group, no payment needed, as we are helping each other simply by being there. |
I recommend www.conquerfear.com and the offered book and workshops. I have taken the workshops, and read the book and they have helped me.
Read this interesting article by Melon Dash. A workshop I recommend if you are afraid in water and would like to overcome your fear. http://www.nspf.org/en/blog.aspx?utm_source=NSPF+blogpost+7%2F1%2F14+to+grads&utm_campaign=nspf+blog+july+1+2014&utm_medium=email |
